My dog is stressed, what can I do?

Stress in dogs can have various causes, but it’s often caused by people. This is often due to noise, strangers, moving, or a visit to the vet. However, some dogs experience this more than others.

How do I recognize signs of stress?

  • Barking; is your dog barking excessively at the window or door? This could be a sign of anxiety or stress.
  • Shaking and shivering; is your dog shaking and trembling a lot? Then he’s probably feeling stressed. This often occurs during fireworks and travel.
  • Hiding; if your dog suddenly starts hiding, it could be to avoid stress, people, or noise.
  • Drooling; this doesn’t just happen when eating tasty food. Anxiety-induced drooling often occurs during car rides or at the vet. Drooling can also indicate dental problems. Always have this checked.

Happiness and fear

Stress may sound negative, but a dog can also experience stress when it’s happy. For example, when your dog gets really excited because you’re finally going for a walk again. This enthusiastic energy also triggers an internal stress response if it persists for too long.

As an owner, you know your dog best, and you’ll quickly notice when your dog isn’t acting like himself. These days, more and more dog owners are adopting a dog from a shelter, which is certainly a good thing. These dogs are often older and sometimes harder to read. A dog can exhibit stress in various situations and for various reasons. Always be aware of this. Stress isn’t healthy for a person, and it’s certainly not healthy for a dog either.

What can I do as an owner?

  • Get plenty of exercise; visit a dog park or take a long walk.
  • Toys: Provide plenty of toys to keep your dog entertained and focused.
  • Stay calm yourself; don’t get stressed out, as dogs can pick up on this energy.
  • Calming dietary supplement; choose a calming aid.
