Before you can recognize the symptoms, it’s important to understand what osteoarthritis is. Osteoarthritis is common in dogs; it’s a wear and tear of the joints that causes pain during movement. Osteoarthritis causes the cartilage surrounding the bones to wear away, causing the bones to rub against each other. <\/p>\n
Unfortunately, there are sometimes misunderstandings about when osteoarthritis can develop in a dog. Not everyone knows that a dog can develop joint problems as early as one year old. This isn’t the stereotypical “old dog” mentality. The condition is very common: one in five dogs suffers from osteoarthritis. It’s quite possible that your dog is in the early stages of osteoarthritis, but you haven’t noticed it yet. <\/p>\n
The telltale signs of osteoarthritis in your dog are often in the early stages of movement. Has your four-legged friend just slept soundly and wants to get up, but it’s difficult? Or does your dog walk stiffly and with difficulty during the first few minutes of a walk? These could be signs of early osteoarthritis. As osteoarthritis progresses, your dog will have more difficulty going up and down stairs, walking long distances, jumping in the car, or even becoming less inclined to go outside. <\/p>\n
